This picture of the George and Dragon was taken in 1962.
This grand looking Georgian style building was established 1814 by Charles Loxton, a strict Wesleyan and one of the founders of Spring Head school.
The Wesleyan society used to have prayer meetings at the hotel.
There are quite a few stories to be told about Charles Loxton and one such story was at the time of the new ‘Weights and Measures Act’.
He was in trouble because the jugs and glasses on the premises were said to be too big ans people were getting more than they paid for.
But Loxton liked it that way and he was summonsed but let off.
Later the Hotel was owned by Duce’s Wine And spirit, later took over by J.H.Walton and later his son.
